Samsung unveils new quickest RAM for mobile phones

Last year, South Korean memory chip maker SK Hynix announced LPDDR5T, the world’s fastest RAM for smartphones, capable of reaching 9.6 Gbps speeds.

Samsung has now broken that record with even faster LPDDR5X RAM, which can reach 10.7 Gbps, making it the world’s fastest yet.

This update comes a few years after Samsung’s 8.5 Gbps LPDDR5X RAM, which represents a 25% increase in performance. However, there are other upgrades onboard besides faster memory.

Samsung can produce 32 GB packages using the new LPDDR5X standard because these chips are based on a newer 12nm process, which makes them smaller and allows for greater capacity.

Samsung is marketing this RAM for AI applications as well, because large language models (LLMs) that power modern generative AI such as ChatGPT require a significant amount of memory to function.

Nvidia’s flagship RTX 4090

This should also benefit modern GPUs, such as Nvidia’s flagship RTX 4090, which is quite powerful but limited by its 24 GB of VRAM.

While Nvidia does provide professional cards with significantly more VRAM, the associated costs are staggering.

The 12nm process also improves power efficiency, allowing the new LPDDR5X chips to save 25% more power and operate in low-power mode for extended periods of time.

This advancement should be beneficial not only for battery-powered mobile devices, but also for servers, where electricity costs make up a significant portion.

Mass production of 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X RAM will begin in the second half of 2024, with smartphones and other devices powered by this new technology expected by the end of the year. In the meantime, Samsung will focus on the next generation of LPDDR6 RAM.
