Robots now smile with latest high quality humanoid skin

Japanese scientists created artificial human skin for robots. They used human cells to make skin that can attach to robots and make them smile realistically. The University of Tokyo researchers published their findings this week. They showed a video of the pink material stretching into a smile. The scientists used a special gel filled with cells that form humanoid skin.

This made a robot covered in living skin. Their study is in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science. The experts hope this technology will help make androids look and act more like humans.

Professor Shoji Takeuchi leads the team. They want their work to help understand wrinkles and facial expressions. They also want to make materials for transplants and makeup.

The new material could change how humanoid robots are made. Current robots have fake skin made of silicone rubber. It can’t sweat or heal itself.

The scientists want to give robots humanoid skin that can heal like human skin. But they are not there yet. In past tests, they put collagen on a cut in lab-grown skin on a robot finger. They showed it could heal.

Next, they want to try healing their smiling robot skin. They said this is a challenge for the future.

To make the robot smile naturally, they turned the skin-like tissue into a gel. They put it in the robot’s holes like human skin. They used real human skin ligaments as inspiration for this method.
