Review of the Sony Xperia 5 IV

Sony has unveiled the Xperia 5 IV, which is shaping up to be one of the market’s most compact Android flagships. We had the phone before it was released, and we thoroughly reviewed it. And, while it may be a major spoiler, we can already say that the Xperia 5 IV is a fantastic device that delivers in spades!

It’s been over a year since the Xperia 5 III wowed us, so we’re excited to meet its successor, the Xperia 5 IV. It enhances the screen, performance, camera technology and quality, and battery capacity while (somewhat) shrinking in size.

The new Sony Xperia 5 IV looks similar to previous Xperia phones, with flat matt panels made of Gorilla Glass Victus sheets and a flat metal frame with a matt finish. The Xperia is dust and water resistant, just like the rest of the series.

The 6.1-inch OLED screen with 1B colors and HDR support on the Xperia 5 IV is the same as on the Xperia 5 III, but it is now 50% brighter. The chipset has been upgraded from the Xperia 5 III’s SD888 to the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Three of the four cameras in this new Xperia are borrowed from the Xperia 1 IV camera phone: the 12MP selfie camera (Sony IMX663) and two of the three rear shooters.

The primary camera on the back is a 12MP Sony IMX 557 imager with large 1.8m pixels (Xperia 5 III, Xperia 1 IV), a 24mm OIS lens, and PDAF. Another Sony IMX 563 imager (Xperia 1 IV) with a 16mm ultrawide-angle lens and autofocus is available.

Surprisingly, the zoom camera has been revised. The resolution remains 12MP, but the lens has been increased to 60mm, providing 2.5x optical zoom over the main camera.

There is no continuous zoom, as on the Xperia 1 IV, nor are there fixed zoom levels, as on the Xperia 5 III. Another improvement over the Xperia 5 III is the larger 5,000mAh battery, which replaces the 4,500mAh battery.
