OnePlus has improved its vision of a real flagship phone to compete with the big names this year, and the result is a sophisticated, stylish gadget. It’s not simply a less expensive flagship; it’s a genuine competitor to Samsung and Google, with its own distinct identity.
That isn’t to suggest that OnePlus has completely bridged the gap between itself and the major Android manufacturers. The $899 price tag on the 10 Pro is more reasonable than the $1,069 price tag on the 9 Pro from previous year. Yet, there are strong reasons to prefer the Pixel 6 Pro or the $999 Galaxy S22 Plus to the 10 Pro at the same price. For one thing, OnePlus needs to catch up to its competition in the camera field.
These really are significant factors, and they prevent me from recommending the 10 Pro to anyone searching for a high-end Android phone. However, I’m pleased by the company’s direction with the 10 Pro, and if this is the new OnePlus, I like where it’s going.
The OnePlus 10 Pro is a big phone, with a 6.7-inch screen. It has a 1440p LTPO OLED panel with long edges that are slightly curved. Its 20:9 aspect ratio is somewhat taller than the S22 Plus and Pixel 6 Pro’s panels, and its top refresh rate of 120Hz equals theirs. When comparing the two displays in direct sunshine, I can tell that the display isn’t quite as bright as the Galaxy S22 Plus’, but it’s bright enough to use comfortably well outside.
