Hasan Waqar Cheema, Rawalpindi’s Deputy Commissioner, has called for an immediate ban on vehicles with large gas cylinders.
The order applies to a variety of modes of transportation, including waggons, minibuses, taxis, rickshaws, Hiace and coasters, in which these cylinders are used instead of conventional petrol or diesel.
Questions about the security risks of this practice, particularly during the summer months when the risk of explosion due to heat is highest, prompted the immediate crackdown.
Talib Hussain, District Officer of Civil Defence, emphasised the potential dangers posed by these cylinders and the need to prioritise public safety.
Authorities are mobilising Civil Defence teams to conduct thorough inspections and confiscate any vehicles that violate the directive.
Cases will be filed against drivers who violate the order, demonstrating the seriousness with which this issue is being addressed.
Crackdown Areas
The crackdown began on Friday, with targeted operations at the Kacheri bus stop, Rawat and Saddar bus stops, Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, Faizabad Bus Stand, and Peshawar Mor Bus Stand.
These efforts are expected to continue to ensure compliance and reduce the risks associated with using large gas cylinders in public transportation.
According to reports from the Special Branch Police, these cylinders are commonly found in vehicles travelling from Rawalpindi to destinations such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujarat, Faisalabad, and the surrounding areas.
