Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has officially launched the third phase of the CM Green Tractor Program. She congratulated the farmers selected for this initiative, which aims to make tractors more affordable for small and medium farmers. The program will help farmers cope with rising machinery costs and boost overall farm productivity.
Details of Phase III
Provincial Agriculture Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani shared that around 427,000 farmers owning up to five acres of land applied for Phase III. Over the past 25 years, only 20,000 tractors have been distributed under this scheme. However, in the last two years alone, 31,000 tractors have been provided, breaking previous records.
Tractor prices have more than doubled over the last five years, creating difficulties for small farmers. The government has prioritised supplying agricultural machinery in 2024 to support these farmers.
Tractors Distribution
The first two phases of the program supplied 21,000 tractors. In this third phase, an additional 10,000 tractors, each with 50-65 horsepower, will be provided to eligible farmers.
Punjab currently has only about 140 tractors per 10,000 acres. This is less than half that of many other countries, underscoring the urgent need for better access to farming machinery.
