The issue of India restricting Pakistani embassies’ and other well-known individuals’ official Twitter accounts was brought up by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday.
The telecom watchdog stated in a statement that Twitter has been advised to reconsider its biased information censorship and allow to view official Pakistani accounts again.
According to a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office, India had blocked access to the Twitter accounts of Pakistan’s embassies in Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and New York’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
“These are in addition to many others for which access has been blocked,” he commented.
The spokesperson had stated that it was really troubling that there was less room for a variety of perspectives and access to information in India.
He had stated that the relevant international standards must be followed by social media sites.
We are urging Twitter to restore immediate access to our accounts and ensure adherence to democratic freedoms of speech and expression,” the spokesperson remarked.
The Asia Desk of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CP) responded by stating that the new trend of social media censorship is unacceptable in light of the removal of journalist Rana Ayyub’s tweet and the blocking of columnist CJ Werleman’s account in India.
