Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the caretaker prime minister, said on Thursday that the government will soon offer relief for electricity customers.

Offer for Electricity Customers

The premier told top journalists in Islamabad that the high cost of electricity is primarily due to contracts with independent power producers (IPPs) and transmission and distribution (T&T) losses.

The prime minister stated, without identifying the International Monetary Fund (IMF), that the government is in talks with appropriate global financial institutions about potential relief for power consumers.

Without Identifying IMF

The prime minister stated that the administration will reveal relief measures soon without violating international agreements.

It is worth noting that nationwide protests over increased electricity rates erupted last week.

Following the protests, the premier convened an emergency conference to discuss possible relief measures. At the moment, however, no immediate relief measures were offered.

In his statements today, the premier minimised the protests, claiming that the situation is not a matter of law and order. He criticised political parties for inciting the demonstrations.
