According to sources, there have setbacks to the National Privatization Commission’s intention to privatize Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) by January of next year.
PIA Privatization Process Faces Legal Hurdles
The privatization process has reportedly stalled due to difficulties repaying loans to PIA and legal obstacles.
The privatization project has clouded by unsolved legal challenges and financial constraints, even though Fawad Hassan Fawad, the Caretaker Minister for Privatization, intended to transfer the national flag carrier to the private sector by January.
The Finance Ministry anticipated to make a significant choice in the next three months to handle the national flag carrier’s financial needs because the airline is experiencing financial difficulties.
Loan Payments on National Flag Carrier
However, there have obstacles encountered in the privatization process, and a decision about the restructuring of government loans for PIA has delayed.
According to sources, with government assurances, the national flag carrier taken out loans totaling more than Rs. 270 billion from commercial banks, including the National Bank and Bank of Punjab.
Moreover, the airline has limited capacity to repay loans; sources emphasize that it is unable to pay interest on a loan of Rs. 260 billion exceeding Rs. 8 billion.
The Treasury Department’s Finance Committee expected to crucial in deciding on airline’s eventual financial requirements as things develop.
The complex aspects underlying PIA’s privatization continue to cast doubt on the plan’s sustainability and the national carrier’s financial health.
