The privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has entered a crucial phase. In December 2025, a consortium led by Arif Habib Group acquired 75% controlling stake in the national airline as part of the government’s privatization initiative to revive PIA’s financial health and operations. Now, attention has turned to the remaining stake in the airline.
Deadline for Buying Remaining Shares
Officials have informed lawmakers that the consortium has been given a final deadline of April 29, 2026 to decide whether it will proceed with the purchase of the remaining 25% government shareholding in PIA. This decision will determine whether the buyer moves toward full private ownership of the airline or retains only its current majority stake.
Senate Standing Committee Update
During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Privatization, the Secretary of the Privatization Commission, Usman Bajwa, confirmed the deadline and outlined the progress made so far. The officials also shared that preparations are underway for a potential full takeover, including management restructuring.
New Management and Leadership Changes
The consortium has already begun the process of appointing a new chief executive officer and management team for PIA as part of the transition plan. These changes are seen as key steps toward operational improvements if full ownership is secured.
Possible Expansion of Consortium Partners
It was also revealed that Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC) may soon join the investor group, subject to approval by the federal cabinet’s Privatization Committee. Inclusion of FFC and other partners could strengthen the consortium’s financial capacity and long‑term commitment.
Expected Financial Closing by End of April
Officials told the committee that the financial closing of the entire privatization transaction is anticipated by the end of April 2026, and they noted that no major obstacles remain at this stage. If the consortium elects to purchase the final 25%, PIA would move into full private ownership.
Significance for PIA Future
Securing full private ownership through acquisition of the remaining government shares could allow for greater operational flexibility, strategic decision‑making, and investment to modernize the airline, improve services, and enhance financial performance in a competitive aviation market.
