Petition against Chairman PTA is accepted by IHC

A petition suit filed against Mr. Aamir Azeem Bajwa, Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, has been accepted by the Islamabad High Court for hearing.

Ameer Haider Cheema, a resident of Sialkot’s Daska area, requested the writ. The petition for writ challenges Chairman PTA’s eligibility to serve as chairman.

Petitioner Mr. Aamir Azeem formerly employed by the state-owned telecom licensee “Special Communication Organization, (SCO).”  His appointment as Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has always raised concerns due to his conflict of interest.

This type of infringement is prohibited by Section 3(4) of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Act of 1996.

The petitioner argued that the appointment of Mr. Aamir Azeem as Chairman of PTA is in violation of the law established by the Honorable Lahore High Court in a case titled Barrister Sardar Muhammad Versus Federation of Pakistan 2013 PLC (C.S) 625 because no ex-employee of any Telecommunication Company is permitted to be appointed as Member or Chairman of PTA under the law.

The petition further argued that the Chairman PTA was mandated by law to impartially oversee the telecom licensees.

The public exchequer is losing money as a result of him giving privileges and favours to his former company, SCO, a PTA licensee.

IHC accepted the petition, notified the parties concerned, and scheduled the hearing on November 2, 2022.
