Pakistan has the region’s second-highest average mobile broadband speed. According to a PTA document, Pakistan has the second-highest average mobile broadband speed in the region.
According to the document, Pakistan’s average mobile broadband download speed is 20.84 Mbps, which is higher than that of other regional countries.
For example, the average mobile broadband download speed in India is 19.57 Mbps, while it is 16.33 Mbps in Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka leads the South Asian region in mobile broadband download speed, with an average of 20.90 Mbps.
Nepal’s average download speed is 20.60 Mbps, which is slightly lower than Pakistan’s. Currently, 3G mobile signals cover 78% of Pakistan’s population and 4G mobile signals cover 75%.
The authority also claims that the cost of one gigabyte of data in Pakistan has dropped to 0.58% of gross national income per capita, well below the UN Broadband Commission’s recommendations.
According to the document, the PTA set a target of 51% broadband penetration by June 2022 and 55% by June 2023 in its performance agreement with the Prime Minister’s Office. In July 2022, the authority achieved 55% broadband penetration.
A target of 80% broadband penetration by 2025 and 90% broadband penetration by 2030 has been set under the National Broadband Policy 2021.
This policy also includes a target of greater than 30 Mbps average broadband speed by 2025, as well as a 50% reduction in average price per gigabyte by 2025.
