Pakistan to Witness Year’s First Supermoon on October 7

Pakistan is set to witness its first full moon of 2025, which will also be a stunning supermoon, lighting up the night sky on October 7. According to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), the event will offer sky-watchers a chance to see the Moon appearing larger and brighter than usual, marking a rare and mesmerizing celestial moment.

What Makes a Supermoon Special

A supermoon happens when the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth, known as the perigee. During this phase, the Moon is about 361,400 kilometres away, making it appear nearly 14% larger and 30% brighter than a normal full moon. This extraordinary closeness allows the Moon’s details and surface features to become more visible and striking to the human eye.

A Rare Lunar Event for 2025

Suparco confirmed that this will be Pakistan’s first supermoon in almost a year, with the previous one visible in November 2024. Many astronomy lovers and photographers eagerly wait for such moments to capture the glowing Moon as it dominates the sky. This year’s event will be especially enchanting for those who enjoy observing the natural beauty of the night sky.

The Moon’s Optical Illusion

Experts at Suparco explained that when the supermoon is seen close to the horizon, it might appear even larger than when it is high in the sky. This visual trick, called the “moon illusion,” is a fascinating phenomenon that has puzzled observers for centuries. It happens because our brain compares the Moon’s size to nearby buildings, trees, or hills, making it seem unusually big.

More Supermoons on the Way

This October’s event will not be the only one in the current cycle. Suparco has announced that three more supermoons are expected soon on November 5 and December 5, 2025, followed by another in early January 2026. However, the January event will fall outside the 2025 series. On average, three to four supermoons occur every year, each one offering a breathtaking sight.

A Treat for Sky Lovers

Astronomy enthusiasts across Pakistan are encouraged to look toward the eastern horizon just after sunset on October 7. The weather conditions, if clear, will make for a perfect viewing experience without needing special equipment. The glow of the supermoon promises to turn the night into a dazzling display, reminding everyone of nature’s quiet beauty and the endless wonder of the skies.
