Pakistan Railways has officially launched its biggest ever digital transformation plan called the RAIN Project (Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network). This project was started to modernize the entire railway system and make it smart, safe, and efficient for passengers and freight services. RAIN is considered the largest digitization effort in Pakistan Railways history.
Project Start and Timeline
The RAIN Project Phase‑I was announced and is already underway as of early 2026. Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has confirmed that the first phase will be completed by June 2026. All activities and technology upgrades under Phase‑I are being executed with Pakistan Railways own revenue, without taking foreign loans or special government funding.
Major Features of the RAIN Project
The RAIN Project includes several technology upgrades that will change how the railways operate.
GPS Tracking for Trains
Every train and locomotive will be fitted with GPS tracking systems. This technology allows officials to see the real‑time location of trains, reduce delays, improve scheduling, and increase passenger safety.
Smart and Safe Stations
Major railway stations will be transformed into smart stations with digital systems. These stations will have
- Digital passenger information displays
- Better security monitoring
- Improved waiting areas
- High‑speed internet connectivity
This upgrade starts with stations modeled after the Rawalpindi Railway Station, and will later be applied to other important stations across Pakistan.
Command and Control Centers
New Command and Control Centers will be set up at the Railways headquarters in Lahore and at each divisional office. These centers will allow officials to monitor train movements, station status, signals, and emergencies in real‑time, helping them respond quickly and efficiently.
Fiber Optic Network
About 1,700 kilometers of the ML‑1 railway network (the country busiest line) will be connected with fiber‑optic cables. This “fiberisation” will support fast data transfer and real‑time communication across the railway system.
Digital Passenger Services
With this infrastructure in place, Pakistan Railways plans to expand digital services for passengers, such as live tracking, online announcements, digital ticketing support, and station‑based Wi‑Fi.
Why the RAIN Project Is Important
The RAIN Project is expected to bring major improvements to Pakistan Railways, including:
- Reduced train delays and better schedule accuracy
- Improved passenger safety thanks to GPS tracking and digital monitoring
- More responsive emergency handling through Command and Control Centers
- Modern station facilities with real‑time information
- Faster communication between trains and central systems
These upgrades are designed to make train travel safer, smoother, and more reliable for millions of passengers nationwide.
What Comes Next
After Phase‑1 completes by June 2026, Pakistan Railways is expected to continue expanding digital systems and services under later phases of the RAIN Project. This may include more stations to be upgraded, additional passenger features, and wider tech support across the network
