NHA Announces Updated Toll Rates for Motorways in Pakistan

motorway toll

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has announced a revised toll tax structure for all national highways and motorways, effective April 5, 2026. This revision is being implemented under Section 10 (2) vii of the NHA Act 1991, as amended in 2024. The updated tolls are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve road maintenance, safety, and infrastructure development across Pakistan.

Updated Toll Rates for Cars

Motorway Route Toll Rate (Cars)
M‑1 Islamabad – Peshawar Rs. 700
M‑3 Lahore – Abdul Hakeem Rs. 1,000
M‑4 Pindi Bhattian – Multan Rs. 1,300
M‑5 Multan – Sukkur Rs. 1,500
M‑14 D.I. Khan – Hakla Rs. 800
E‑35 Hassan Abdal – Manshera Rs. 350

Tolls for Heavy Vehicles

Higher tolls have been set for buses, trucks, and articulated vehicles. For example, articulated trucks on M‑5 (Multan–Sukkur) will now pay Rs. 7,150, while 2 & 3 axle trucks are charged Rs. 5,850. Buses and other commercial vehicles will also face proportionally higher rates. These charges reflect the increased wear and tear caused by heavier vehicles on road infrastructure.

Purpose of the Revision

The NHA has emphasized that the revision is necessary to ensure sustainable funding for the national highway network. The collected tolls will be used to maintain high-quality roads, enhance safety, and support ongoing infrastructure projects, including expansion and modernization of motorways.

Implementation and Payment Methods

The new toll structure will take effect from April 5, 2026, and the NHA encourages all motorists to use digital payment methods, including the M‑Tag system, for faster and more efficient toll collection. Non‑M‑Tag vehicles may face additional charges, as part of the effort to encourage cashless transactions and improve traffic flow at toll plazas.

Conclusion

This toll revision is part of the NHA’s periodic review of highway charges to keep pace with inflation, road maintenance costs, and vehicle traffic growth. While tolls are higher than before, the authority stresses that these adjustments are crucial for maintaining safe, durable, and efficient road networks across Pakistan.
