Pakistan mobile market imports are surprisingly surging 209%

In Pakistan, mobile phone imports have increased significantly. From March to April 2024, imports rose by 5.44%, reaching $161.393 million.

Compared to April 2023, this is a 1,424% increase. The total value of imports in Pakistani rupees was Rs414.276 billion, up 279% from the previous year’s Rs109.158 billion.

Telecom imports overall saw a 135% rise, totaling $1.834 billion. Alongside higher imports, local manufacturing of mobile handsets also grew.

In the first two months of 2024, Pakistan produced 6.1 million handsets. Despite import challenges, the mobile phone sector in Pakistan shows significant growth in both imports and local production.

The sharp rise in mobile phone imports reflects the increasing demand for mobile devices in Pakistan. This growth continues despite various import challenges, showing a strong market for mobile phones.

Moreover, the growth in local manufacturing indicates Pakistan is making progress in producing its own handsets, which could help balance future import requirements.

Pakistan’s Mobile Phone Imports Surge 209% to $1.462B

Pakistan bought lots of mobile phones worth $1.462 billion from July 2023 to April 2024. This is a big 209.07% increase from last year’s $473.287 million.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) shared this information. In April 2024, imports went up to $161.393 million from $153.045 million in March 2024.

Compared to April 2023’s $10.587 million, 2024 saw a huge 1,424.42% increase.

In local money, imports reached Rs414.276 billion. This is a big 279.52% rise from Rs109.158 billion last year.

Total telecom imports reached $1.834 billion during July-April 2023-24. This is a 135.44% increase from the year before.

In April 2024, telecom imports jumped to $211.663 million. This is a 515.52% rise from April 2023.

Local factories made 6.1 million handsets in January-February 2024. In February alone, 3.83 million handsets were made.

Data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shows 60% of phones are smartphones and 40% are 2G phones. Even with limits on accessory imports, mobile phone purchases went up.
