Pakistan experiences rainfall in July that breaks a 61-year record

This July, Pakistan received 177.6mm of rainfall, 181% more than the normal of 63.1mm, making it the wettest July since 1961.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) monthly climate report released on Wednesday, the rainfall from last month alone was 26% more than the total for the whole monsoon season.

A breakdown by province reveals that Balochistan received more rain than the usual amount in July by more than 450 percent, Sindh by more than 308 percent, Punjab by more than 116 percent, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) by more than 32 percent, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) by more than 30 percent.

The monsoon arrived in northern regions on June 30, one day earlier than usual, and July was the wettest month of the year because to three lengthy rainstorms. The average contribution of July’s rainfall to the monsoon and annual rainfall was 45% and 21%, respectively.

Unfortunately, the torrential rains also caused large flash floods in southwest Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan, which further increased the loss of life and property.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) base Masroor in Karachi was the wettest location, with a total monthly rainfall of 606 mm, while the wettest day of the month was July 25 in Badin, Sindh.

In July 2022, the PMD reported that the average monthly temperature across the country was 29.93°C, which was 1.34°C colder than the normal monthly temperature of 31.27°C.

“The nighttime (minimum) temperature was 24.83°C, being 0.47°C cooler than the country average of 25.30°C.”
