Pakistan Enters Final Round of 5G Spectrum Auction for 3500 MHz Band

5G spectrum auction

Pakistan has entered the final round of its 5G spectrum auction, as bidding for block positions in the 3500 MHz frequency band officially began. This marks a critical stage in the country’s efforts to roll out next-generation 5G mobile services. Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Ministry of IT and Telecom launched the assignment stage bidding at PTA headquarters.

After Successful Primary Auction

The assignment phase follows the successful completion of the primary 5G spectrum auction, which raised approximately $507 million by selling 480 MHz of spectrum across multiple frequency bands, including the key 3500 MHz range. Major telecom operators such as Jazz Pakistan, Ufone, and Zong Pakistan secured significant portions of the spectrum during this initial auction.

Understanding the Assignment Stage

Unlike the initial auction where operators won the rights to specific spectrum blocks, the current assignment stage determines the exact placement of those blocks within the 3500 MHz and 2600 MHz bands. The location of these blocks can impact network performance, signal quality, and interference management, all of which are crucial for efficient 5G operations.

Bidding Includes Major Operators

All three major licensed telecom operators in Pakistan are participating in the bidding process to secure their preferred spectrum positions. Each round of bidding is time-limited and conducted electronically, ensuring transparency and fairness. Operators evaluate whether to bid for upper, middle, or lower portions of the spectrum based on technical and commercial priorities.

Government and Regulator Emphasize Growth

Officials have highlighted that this phase of the auction is a milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation strategy. Completion of both the primary auction and the assignment process will enable the launch of commercial 5G services nationwide, promising faster internet speeds, lower latency, and improved connectivity for consumers and businesses.

5G Services Expected Soon

With the 5G spectrum now allocated and assignment bidding underway, telecom operators are preparing for network deployment. Experts predict that finalizing spectrum positions is one of the last regulatory steps before 5G services can be rolled out in major Pakistani cities, potentially within the coming months.
