A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pakistan and China has formalised their commitment to tackle climate change.

The signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) titled ‘Provision of Goods Under South-South Cooperation.
It is for Addressing Climate Change’ took place at the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) and was attended by high-ranking officials.
Minister of Ecology and Environment
The historic agreement was signed by Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Moin-ul-Haque, and Zhao Yingmin, Vice-Minister of Ecology and Environment in China.
China has promised to assist Pakistan in strengthening its efforts to develop renewable energy sources and improve disaster management capabilities.
China will specifically work with Pakistan to improve early warning systems, forecasting, monitoring, and disaster response processes.
Capacity-building Programmes
Pakistan will receive 5,000 solar household systems from the country, as well as capacity-building programmes for Pakistani officials.
This is the first time China has provided such assistance to Pakistani officials.
Ambassador Moin thanked the Chinese government and praised the two countries’ collaboration in addressing climate change.
Global Development Initiative
He also praised the Global Development Initiative (GDI), which aims to deepen collaborations among developing nations in pursuit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a focus on climate action.
Ambassador Moin emphasised the necessity of this relationship by recalling China’s assistance to Pakistan during the 2021 floods caused by climate change.
The MoU establishes Pakistan as the first GDI partner country, emphasising climate change as a focus point for collaboration between the two countries.
