More than 450 people from Pakistan are in jails in India. They were put there for acts like crossing borders or spying. Some Pakistani fishermen are in jail because they were fishing in Indian waters.

On Monday, India and Pakistan traded lists of prisoners. They did this through their embassies in Islamabad and New Delhi. They do this twice a year, on January 1st and July 1st, following the 2008 Consular Access Agreement.

Pakistan sent India a list with 254 people on it. These are people from India or thought to be from India. The list includes fishermen caught in Pakistan. India sent Pakistan a list with 452 people on it. These are people from Pakistan or thought to be from Pakistan. The list includes fishermen caught in India. Pakistan also sent a list with 38 Pakistani military personnel. They disappeared during the wars in 1965 and 1971. Pakistan thinks they might be in Indian jails.

Pakistan wants India to release prisoners who finished their sentences and send them back home. It asked for special help for prisoners who have physical or mental challenges. Pakistan also wants quick confirmation of where these prisoners are from and cares a lot about the safety and well-being of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. Pakistan is working hard to fix these issues and bring its prisoners back home soon.

In 2023, 62 Pakistani prisoners came back home. Four more have come back this year.
