Concerned about the volatility of the global economy and the smartphone business, Oppo has decided to shut down its semiconductor subsidiary Zeku in Shanghai.
Zeku’s contributions to the creation of the MariSilicon X ISP and MariSilicon Y audio chip were substantial. Its high-end Find X and Reno models, together with the Find N2 Flip, both used these two technologies.
Oppo has successfully developed its own line of co-processors, ISPs, modems, power management chips, and audio chips since entering the chip-making industry in 2019. The company is said to have spent about $1.4 billion on its chipset development effort, which is a very large sum.
Oppo is exploring new oppurtunities
It was also speculated that Oppo was working on its own SoCs to compete with Samsung, Google, and Apple, although they were expected to be ready in a few years.
The company probably saw this coming when it decided to cease using its own proprietary processors in recent Find X devices. In the future, The company’s phones are likely to rely on the ISP, NPU, and other components from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs.
