OpenAI is close to releasing a new search tool that could compete with Google Search and the AI-powered startup Perplexity.
This new product from the creators of ChatGPT is expected to be available as early as next Monday, May 13, just one day before Google’s I/O conference begins.
At this event, Google is expected to unveil several AI-related products as well as discuss Android 15, its next major smartphone OS update.
OpenAI Plans
OpenAI plans to improve ChatGPT by incorporating a search engine that can retrieve real-time data from the internet and provide citations.
This upgrade aims to address one of the most common criticisms levelled at ChatGPT: its reliance on outdated data. The design of OpenAI’s new search tool appears to be similar to Perplexity’s offering.
Valued of $1 billion
Perplexity, which is valued at around $1 billion, offers an AI-powered search interface that includes citations, images, and text.
The company was founded by three engineers: Aravind Srinivas from OpenAI, Denis Yarats from Meta, and Johnny Ho from Quora.
NSFW Content on ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s NSFW filter may be lifted soon, according to a new OpenAI Model Spec document.
This document, cited by WIRED, demonstrates that the company is looking into ways to allow sexually explicit and other adult-rated content on the AI chatbot “responsibly.”
Contrary to some other large language models, ChatGPT currently prohibits users from creating NSFW content on its platform. According to the document, this would allow for “erotica, extreme gore, slurs, and unsolicited profanity.”
