A road in the Queens neighborhood of New York City has been named after Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the nation’s national poet, in honor of Pakistan’s upcoming Independence Day.
At a well-attended celebration in Richmond Hill, Queens, where people were waving the national flag and shouting loudly, “Pakistan Zindabaad,” “Allama Iqbal Avenue” was officially opened.
The gathering served as the climax of the Pakistani-American community’s long-term, extensive lobbying efforts, with the American-Pakistani Advocacy Group (APAG), a non-profit organization, playing a key role.
Masood Khan, the ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, praised President Ali Rashid of the American Pakistani Advocacy Group for taking the initiative to co-name Allama Iqbal Avenue in New York.
He also praised Ali Rashid for his tenacious efforts to improve ties between Pakistan and the United States and for raising awareness of Pakistan’s history and culture in the country.
Adrienne Adams, Speaker of the New York City Council, gave a speech at the event and said: “As we approach Pakistan Independence Day, he is honored to celebrate the co-naming of 109th Street and 101st Avenue as ‘Allama Iqbal Avenue’.”
He claimed that Allama Iqbal’s efforts and vision were responsible for Pakistan’s formation as an independent nation.
