NADRA Makes NICOP Cancellation Free for Overseas Pakistanis

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new policy to make life easier for overseas Pakistanis. It has been announced that the cancellation of the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) for deceased citizens will now be completely free. This major step follows directions from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to improve record accuracy.

Purpose Behind the Decision

The main aim of this decision is to encourage timely and accurate death registration of overseas Pakistanis. Families often face challenges in completing official processes after losing a loved one. By removing the cancellation fee, NADRA hopes to reduce its burden and promote a smoother registration process that keeps the country’s citizen database up to date.

How the Process Works

According to NADRA, the cancellation process is simple and convenient. Once a death is registered with the relevant Union Council in Pakistan or a Pakistani Embassy abroad, any close family member, such as parents, siblings, spouse, or children, can apply to cancel the NICOP. The process is free and can be done online or in person at a nearby NADRA Center.

Pak ID App for Easier Access

Families can also complete the NICOP cancellation through the Pak ID mobile application without visiting any office. NADRA has also removed the old rule that required families to physically return the deceased’s NICOP card. This digital option saves time and helps overseas Pakistanis manage the process from anywhere in the world.

Simplifying National Records Management

This decision is part of NADRA’s wider goal to simplify document handling for citizens. By offering free NICOP cancellation, NADRA aims to ensure that death records are promptly updated. It also helps prevent identity misuse and keeps national data accurate. The move is being praised as a thoughtful gesture toward overseas Pakistani families.

A Step Toward Efficient Governance

Through this new policy, NADRA has taken another step toward efficient governance and digital convenience. It reflects the government’s commitment to supporting overseas Pakistanis and strengthening trust in public institutions. Free NICOP cancellation will not only ease families’ pain but also enhance transparency and accuracy in national recordkeeping.
