Mitchell Starc set a new record by dismissing Ishan Kishan in the first over of India’s ICC World Cup 2023 match against Australia in Delhi on Sunday.

Following Starc’s early blow, Josh Hazlewood wreaked havoc on the Indian batters, sending two more back to the pavilion, and the home side was soon 2-3 in just two overs.

However, the Australian bowlers’ early brilliance was in vain as KL Rahul and Virat Kohli built a match-winning 165-run partnership and won the match.

Despite the loss, Starc accomplished a feat by becoming the fastest bowler in ICC World Cup history to take 50 wickets.

The 33-year-old achieved this feat in 19 innings, six fewer than Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, who took 25 innings to reach this milestone.

The following two bowlers on this list are also Australians and Sri Lankans. Glenn McGrath and Muttiah Muralitharan both hit the century mark in 30 innings.

Starc also holds the record for most wickets in a single Cricket World Cup edition, with 27 in 10 matches in 2019. Mohammad Shami of India is the closest to breaking Starc’s record, with 31 wickets in just 11 innings.

Even though the experienced Indian pacer did not play against Australia, he will look for opportunities in the future.

Fastest Player in ODI World Cup History

During the same game, Australian opener David Warner made history by becoming the fastest player in One Day International (ODI) World Cup history to reach 1000 runs in just 19 innings.

He surpassed India’s great Sachin Tendulkar and South Africa’s AB de Villiers, who both had 1000 runs in 20 innings.

He also became the third Australian to achieve this feat, following Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting.
