Microsoft is well-known for attempting to divert consumers away from other browsers while promoting its own Edge. Microsoft’s browser is now erroneously classifying Google Chrome as malware.
Microsoft Edge has begun to flag ChromeSetup.exe, the Google Chrome installation file, as potentially dangerous.
This problem has been discovered in about one out of every five Microsoft Edge 116 stable installations.
Microsoft Edge in-built security system
While Edge has an in-built security system designed to protect users from harmful files, it appears to have miscalculated ChromeSetup.exe and labelled it as a potential threat.
When attempting to download Chrome with Microsoft Edge, users may receive the following warning: “ChromeSetup.exe could harm your device.”
Do you still want to keep it?” Following that, customers are given the option to “Keep” or “Delete” the downloaded file.
Coincidence
This is most certainly a bug, but the synchronicity of it targeting its main competitor is uncanny. We’re all aware of Microsoft’s efforts to keep you committed to Edge.
Switching your default browser on Windows has become easier, but when you look for Google Chrome online, Microsoft makes every effort to keep you on Edge. You are given the following prompt:
There’s no need to install a new browser. Microsoft Edge is recommended for a quick, secure, and contemporary browsing experience that can save you time and money. Try it right now.
Even if you ignore this prompt, Edge makes another desperate try, telling you that the Microsoft browser is powered by the same engine as Chrome.
Given all of these practises, it’s difficult to dismiss this latest development as merely a problem.
Microsoft has yet to reply to this scenario, but because this warning is not widely distributed, there is a good likelihood that the corporation has already resolved the issue.
