As part of its updated “mid-term management strategy,” Mazda has stated that it would raise its funding for electric vehicle (EV) research. As part of a three-phase strategy, the Japanese manufacturer now plans to invest 1.5 trillion ($16 billion) in the development of electric vehicles.
The Initial Stage
Mazda will create a new specialized EV architecture in the first phase (2022–2025), while also introducing hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles to cut down on carbon emissions. Mazda stated that it will introduce 5 series hybrid and 5 plug-in hybrid cars by 2025 in a mid-2020 announcement. Additionally, it intended to introduce three electrified versions or variations at the same time.
Second Phase
Mazda will “launch EV-dedicated vehicles” in China, “where electrification is expanding,” as well as “battery electric vehicles internationally,” as part of the second phase from 2025 to 2027. The versions aimed at China may have a different platform or be unique in some other manner from EVs marketed elsewhere given this strange language. Akira Marumoto, CEO of Mazda, stated that the company is also thinking at expanding its EV production footprint to the US in order to take advantage of the tax benefits offered there.
The Third Stage
Mazda will “push the full-fledged launch of battery EVs” in the third phase, starting in 2027. The company will also now take into account internalizing battery production. Mazda will work with joint-venture technical partners to develop key technologies, such as batteries, chips, and motors, for its expanded EV push.
Model for Vision Studies
Mazda showed us the Vision Study Model, a concept 2-door sports vehicle, as it concluded its presentation of the updated mid-term management strategy.
The MX-5, Mazda’s renowned sports vehicle, was seen in all four iterations of the film. The sleek two-door, two-seat coupe may have information about either the next MX-5 or another electric sports vehicle with the MX moniker.
