The Geely Boyue-based Proton X70 has undergone its first minor model update after nearly four years on the Malaysian market (MMC). The visual modifications of the new 2022 Proton X70 are quite light and minimal, in comparison to the donor Geely Boyue, which was extensively renovated for the 2022 model year.
The most noticeable change is the inclusion of a 1.5L three-cylinder turbo engine, which is previously used in Pakistan with the X70. The engine produces 177 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The current 1.8L turbo engine is now only available in the flagship model.
The 1.8L TGDi Premium 2WD costs RM121, 800 (PKR 55.55 lakh), the 1.5L TGDi Premium 2WD costs RM117, 900 (PKR 53.77 crore), the 1.5L TGDi Executive AWD costs RM111, 300 (PKR 50.76 lac), the 1.5L TGDi Executive 2WD costs RM105, 500 (PKR 48.11 lac), and the 1.5L TGDi Standard 2WD costs RM93, 900 (PKR 48 (PKR 42.82 lac).
According to Muhamad Hasbullah Ismail, Proton’s deputy COO for powertrain, the 1.5L engine offers a 7% reduced fuel consumption in urban driving and is 43kg lighter at 113kg than the 1.8L block. Proton has also created a new foam-type engine cover that decreases noise, vibration, and harshness from the engine.
The new X70 resembles the pre-facelift predecessor in terms of appearance.
There are no new body panels, but the Infinite Weave grille bars, front bumper corner “rings,” rear number plate garnish, and an ornamental rear skid plate that were originally matte grey are now gloss black.
A brighter matte silver has been applied to the front chin spoiler and the air curtain inlet inserts. Meanwhile, instead of body color, the inserts’ surrounds have been painted gloss black, and the side mirrors have been blacked out. Finally, depending on the trim level, two new alloy wheel styles are available.
