Loadshedding is projected to worsen in the next months, according to former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, as Pakistan faces fuel shortages due to insufficient supply plans.
According to a senior Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) leader speaking to journalists in Islamabad, the minimum loadshedding time in June and July will be three hours.
According to him, loadshedding in the country currently lasts two and a half hours. However, because power plants are closed owing to a lack of fuel, load shedding on some feeders lasts longer.
He went on to say that because fuel costs are at all-time highs around the world, power cannot be generated using expensive fuel because it would be out of reach for most people.
For the month of February, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) increased the power tariff by Rs 4.8 per unit due to a fuel cost adjustment (FCA).
The government had inked a long-term contract to import LNG from Qatar at a rate of $10/MMBTU under PMLN’s previous tenure, according to the former premier.
LNG is currently unavailable, even at a price of $30 per MMBTU. He accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf administration for the energy sector’s mismanagement.
