Loadshedding crisis is the new challenge for Pakistan

Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said loadshedding will continue. High-loss feeders will experience power cuts.

He talked to reporters. Ali Pervaiz Malik, the Finance Minister, was with him. On May 29, 2024, Pakistan needed 25,820MW of electricity.

The system made and gave 21,588MW. There was 4,232MW missing, causing power cuts.

Leghari said power cuts happen in areas called Category 3-8 feeders. These areas lose a lot of electricity. Giving power to them makes the problem worse.

The country can’t afford to lose this much money. To stop more debt, power cuts will continue. Power companies need to change.

They must fix the problem with help from the provinces. Power cuts will stay in high-loss areas. Places where a lot of electricity is stolen will get penalties.

Minister Says Loadshedding in Low-Loss Areas Need Fixing

Power cuts also happen in places called Category 1-2 feeders. These places lose less electricity, below 20%. Here, technical problems cause the power cuts. Bosses of power companies need to do better.

They must stop power cuts in places that don’t lose electricity. The system can give enough power as more people need it, especially in the summer.

Leghari said 7,000 megawatts of electricity comes from water power. The country can make up to 10,000 megawatts this way. New power plants will start soon and make more electricity.

The government will keep the net-metering policy. They are checking the numbers to see if changes are needed. Net-metering lets people trade extra electricity for the same amount back.

Power companies buy extra electricity at a set price. This price has been the same since 2017. It might change soon to cover higher costs.

Current investors will keep their same deals. Their licenses and rules will not change.

Leghari mentioned the Roshan Pakistan app. It shows information about power distribution. The app is available on the Play Store.
