Karachi official denies surging heatwave deaths happened

Karachi’s top official Syed Hasan Naqvi said reports on heatwave deaths are wrong. He said the real number of deaths is lower. He also said no source confirmed higher numbers.

At a news talk on Wednesday, Naqvi said 10 people died from heat in two days. The city saw 1,700 cases of heatstroke.

Naqvi gave more details. He said eight people died on Monday. Two more died on Tuesday.

The Edhi Foundation said 568 people died from heat. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan is also worried about the weather. They are concerned about extreme weather events.

For the first time since 2015, Karachi hit 42°C in June. It felt like 51°C. Rain might give the people a break today. The weather may cool down. Naqvi asked groups to check with the government before sharing death numbers.

He told Karachi-Electric to avoid power cuts from midnight to 6am. He said the heatwave lasts two or three days.

The city set up 124 centers with water to help people stay cool. Hospitals also have special wards to treat heatstroke patients.
