On Thursday, the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta in Saudi Arabia issued a statement warning people that Islam forbids the infringement of intellectual property (IP) rights and asks people to respect them, as well as advising against the misuse of such rights or illegally benefiting from them.
According to the Saudi Gazette, the committee declared that thoughts are also considered intellectual property and have value. Thus, without the owner’s permission, under a contract or a permit, infringement of ideas is likewise prohibited.
It went on to say that any tangible or financial gains derived from the IP remain the owner’s property and cannot be taken without their consent.
The statement also cautioned against illegally possessing intellectual property, benefiting from it, or obtaining any type of compensation from it without the authorization of its owner.
Grand Mufti of the Kingdom Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Al-Sheikh, Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars and General President of Scholarly Research and Ifta, praised the Permanent Committee for Ifta’s statement, noting that it was a significant step toward raising awareness of intellectual property rights and promoting respect in this area.
