After a long hiatus, Apple‘s major HomeKit overhaul has returned in iOS 16.4, finally delivering on the smart home performance boost that was promised in the summer of 2022. The wait is over.
In December of last year, Apple published iOS 16.2 with a new architecture. But, the update was quickly retracted due to several flaws that interfered with the installation, sharing, and use of even the most fundamental smart home products. The good news is that it has returned in iOS 11.4, iPadOS 16.4, and macOS Sierra 13.3, all of which are the most recent software upgrades released by Apple.
Under the banner that reads “Home Upgrade Available,” tap the three dots to access the Home app’s menu, then tap Home Settings. If you upgraded your setup during the initial availability window, however, you won’t need to take any further action; the update will be applied immediately.
If you update the Home app, your current setup will be converted to the new architecture immediately. Apple promises that updating will improve the speed and reliability of all of your interconnected smart home devices.
Apple’s Homekit is versatile
This revision is a great complement to the recent news that the Matter smart home standard is compatible with Apple’s HomeKit. Apple, Google, Amazon, and a slew of other companies back it, making it a breeze to use devices from different manufacturers.
No new HomeKit features have been spotted in Apple’s most recent iOS 16.5 beta. If Apple has anything significant in store for its smarthome technology, it might be unveiled as part of WWDC 2023, where we anticipate seeing iOS 17 and other new Apple software unveiled for the first time.
