In order to develop processors for a variety of smart edge devices that are geared for high performance, low power, and always-on connection, Intel stated MediaTek intends to employ Intel Foundry Services (IFS).
MediaTek and Intel launched a strategic agreement on Monday that will enable the former to make use of the latter’s cutting-edge manufacturing technology to support the construction of a more balanced and durable supply chain.
Team Blue can help MediaTek increase its presence in the US and Europe thanks to its sizable capacity in those regions.
We are unsure of the agreement’s financial details and the number of chips Intel will produce for MediaTek.
The initial batch of chips will be produced using the Intel 16 legacy node, which should be ready for tapeouts by the end of the year and production ramps by the beginning of 2023.
For less demanding applications, Intel 16 is an improved version of the company’s 22FFL (FinFET Low Power) technology.
One of the top fabless chip designers in the world is MediaTek. It manufactures more than two billion devices annually, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) providing the majority of them.
“We have the right combination of advanced process technology and geographically diverse capacity to help MediaTek deliver the next billion connected devices across a range of applications,” said IFS President Randhir Thakur.
Early in 2021, Intel announced the beginning of IFS, a program to share its technology with other chipmakers and address the soaring demand for semiconductor production capabilities around the world.
When additional fabs in Ohio and Germany go online, IFS customers will have access to them in addition to its current worldwide manufacturing network.
