Intel and AMD have teamed up to make faster CPUs

Three of the industry’s largest chip makers have joined forces to improve CPU designs across the board, which should boost processor speeds and efficiency. To make chiplets more versatile, Intel, AMD, and ARM have formed an alliance to launch a Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe) standard.

According to Tom’s Hardware, if everything goes as planned, chipmakers will be able to use chiplets from various companies to create an ideal system-on-chip (SoC).

Major partners have already joined the alliance, including Samsung, TSMC, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and others. It’s only a matter of time before other tech behemoths join in.

However, don’t bet just yet because it will be some time before we see chips based on the new UCIe standard. The alliance still needs to define the form factor, protocols, and other technical details.

The new chiplet standard will result in several advancements in chip design. First and foremost, it will significantly accelerate CPU and SoC development because companies will be able to use ready-made chiplet designs rather than having to build their own from scratch.

Companies will also be able to sell their chiplets to other brands, expanding the technology’s reach. Chips will become more homogeneous, resulting in more consistent performance. This will benefit a wide range of devices, including smartphones, laptop computers, cloud servers, and others.
