In a surprising development, Instagram has confirmed that it is testing intrusive ads that cannot be skipped within the app.
Images of these new types of advertisements, known as “ad breaks,” have been making the rounds on the internet.
These ad breaks, like full-screen video ads, include a countdown timer that prevents you from scrolling through the app until the countdown expires.
Meta Spokesperson
Although Instagram has not provided specific information, a Meta spokesperson confirmed.
That the company is conducting tests to identify formats that could be beneficial to advertisers.
The spokesperson stated that these are preliminary tests, and any significant changes to the results will be announced.
Bonkers
The story came to light after Instagram user Dan Levy shared a screenshot of an unskippable ad during the test. Levy described the move as “bonkers.”
Instagram has not said where it is testing this feature or whether it will be expanded to other regions.
However, based on social media posts complaining about the feature, it appears that the “ad breaks” appear while scrolling through videos or Reels.
Instagram’s Evolution
This is unsurprising given Instagram’s evolution into a platform that heavily emphasises video content via features such as Stories and Reels, which is a natural progression from its original function as a photo-sharing app.
It is unclear whether content creators will have any say over the placement of these advertisements.
