According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), local manufacturing plants produced/assembled 9.72 million mobile handsets during the first four months of 2022 (January-April), compared to 0.86 million imported commercially.
In April 2022, local manufacturing plants produced/assembled 2.56 million mobile handsets, compared to 0.25 million commercially imported.
5.69 million 2G and 4.03 million 3G and 4G smartphones are among the 9.72 million smartphones locally manufactured/assembled. Furthermore, according to PTA data, 53 percent of mobile devices on the Pakistan network are 3G and 4G smartphones, while 47 percent are 2G.
Despite the increase in local smartphone production, Pakistan imported $1.810 billion worth of mobile phones in the first ten months of 2021-22, compared to $1.684 billion in the same period the previous year, a 7.43 percent increase, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
Overall telecom imports into the country climbed by 14.05 percent during the review period (July-April) 2021-22, rising from $2.116 billion in July-April 2020-21 to $2.413 billion in the same period last year.
According to PTA data, the local manufacturing trend shows a favorable response to the PTA’s Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Authorization regulatory regime.
