How to unblock Spotify

Spotify is one of the best ways to listen to music on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, but it is not always available.

We’ll go over a few methods for unblocking it, whether it’s due to your school, employer, government, or even Spotify itself.

Why might Spotify be blocked for you?

Spotify may be blocked for a variety of reasons, which fall into roughly two categories: First, your school or office could put up blocks, which we’ll refer to as institutional blocks.

Regional blocks, on the other hand, prevent you from accessing specific songs or even Spotify in its entirety depending on where you live.

Regional locks are more diverse: some countries do not have access to Spotify, usually due to censorship (China is a good example), while others simply have different songs they can listen to, which is usually determined by the deals the rights holders have made with Spotify.

These restrictions appear insurmountable, but there is good news: regardless of the type of restriction, all of them can be easily circumvented using a simple tool known as a VPN.

How VPNs work to unblock Spotify?

Virtual private networks are tools that allow you to reroute your connection and appear to be somewhere else. At the same time, they secure your connection, allowing you to browse without fear of being tracked, which is a nice bonus.

In the case of Spotify, you can simply reroute around the block, and the enhanced security prevents this rerouting from being detected.

For example, if you’re in China and want to listen to the US version of Spotify, you’d use a VPN to reroute your connection to the US, which should resolve the issue.

This also works for institutional blocks, but it’s a little less drastic: instead of a server on the other side of the world, use one in your own city or country. The same logic applies: you make a new connection that goes around the block, and that’s all there is to it.
