This is empathy.
Some people are quite good at empathy, whilst others struggle greatly with it. However, even as an adult, empathy may be acquired.
Despite inhabiting a globe with seven billion other people, we spend our whole lives alone in our minds. The only ways we can encounter the world are with our own senses and on a mental picture canvas. Except for those times when we have empathy. Then, we are able to “see” through the eyes of another individual to get a glimpse of life from a perspective other than our own.
How it will benefit you
Cognitive empathy is the capacity to understand a person’s feelings, potential thoughts, and reasons for their feelings and thoughts. This is a wholly mental process whereby one gathers pertinent data and infers the emotional state of another person from it.
