Google Meet now supports 1080p video calls, however this functionality is only available to paid subscribers.
According to a recent release on Wednesday, the change is only being sent out to a subset of Google One and Workspace users.
Google Meet New Features
Furthermore, this feature is only available through the web-based version of G-Meet, and you will also need a webcam that supports 1080p resolution.
Google has claimed that 1080p video would use more data and that the resolution will be automatically changed in circumstances where bandwidth is constrained.
To enable the functionality, users must click the three dots in the upper-right corner of their video feed and then choose “Turn on HD video,” as shown in the GIF below.
It previously only allowed resolutions of 720p or lower, so the addition of 1080p resolution is a good bonus. Other video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, have already included 1080p capabilities.
Users who have subscribed to the following plans: Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus, Enterprise Essentials, and Frontline will be able to use 1080p video calling.
It is also available to people with a G-One subscription that includes at least 2TB of storage.
Google Meet is now offering 1080 quality video chats in order to compete with Zoom and Microsoft Teams, both of which already provide HD video resolutions.
The new upgrade is now only available for the web, requires a camera with 1080p capabilities, and is limited to two-person meetings.
The capability is now available to paid users as well as Google One customers with at least 2TB of storage.
Users would have to actively upgrade to latest version, which is not enabled by default. A pop-up from the change button will notify users that they can now allow others to view them in HD. In this new update, Google Meet has also added new emoji reactions and automatic transcriptions.
1st Google App Growth Lab
In a statement, Farhan Qureshi – Google’s Regional Director for Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka – said:
“Today, we are proud to announce the launch of App Growth Lab to support up-and-coming local developers and help them expand their offerings to an international audience.
The initiative will begin in June and will last four months. Interested enterprises, app development studios, and organisations may apply until May 22, 2023.
The App Growth Lab programme is built around four core pillars: uncovering the global app and gaming opportunity to understand different levers to set a company’s overall strategy.
Bringing a user-centric mindset to app and game product development and leveraging best-in-class technology to set an app up for long-term success.
Uncovering strategies to win the launch, setting up monetisation models, and maximising Google’s data tools to achieve measurable growth; and acquiring knowledge.
The curriculum builds on the success of last year’s Gaming Growth Lab in Pakistan.
The Gaming Growth Lab, a virtual five-week initiative, was created to assist budding mobile-gaming entrepreneurs in expanding their offers and growing their businesses.
Google, the largest search engine and video-sharing platform in the world, is planning to construct a liaison office in Pakistan, although Twitter and Facebook have stated they are unable to open offices there in the near future.
The global juggernaut has already registered itself as a corporation in Pakistan, according to an announcement made on Friday by IT and Telecom Minister Syed Amin-Ul-Haque.
“A delegation of Google is scheduled to come to Pakistan early next week from Singapore and the company will likely announce the establishment of a functional office here,” the IT Minister told the local Newspaper agency. He also revealed TikTok’s agreement to open a liaison office in Pakistan.
