Google has been spotted testing update progress bar indicators similar to those found on iOS.
As Google greys out the icons in the launcher for applications that are currently being updated or installed, the progress indicators are almost certainly a limited test. The progress bar indicates the status of the update, and the text that replaces the app name indicates what is currently happening.
The reports come from a Pixel 5 running Android 12 Beta 1 with the Pixel launcher and a new Play Store version.
Artem Russakovskii, founder of APKMirror.com and AndroidPolice.com, claims that the feature works when the “Add new apps to Home screen” feature is manually enabled on most home screen launchers.
The updated feature differs from iOS in that it uses an exterior progress bar that follows the edge of the icon rather than the interior circular/pie progress bar.
The update also detects system accent colours. During the update process, the app icon, like on iOS, is greyed out, and the text beneath the app is replaced with a description of the current update action.
The update also applies to newly installed apps if the launcher is set to display them on the home screen. Similarly to iOS, the app appears grayed-out with the progress indicator and label until it is fully installed.
However, when applications are restored from backups during the device setup process, Android does something similar. The progress indicator, on the other hand, does not have the same label replacement.
