For this reason, Facebook is locking users out of their accounts

If you can’t log into your Facebook account today, it’s because some users who failed to activate Facebook Protect with two-factor authentication by the March 17 deadline have been locked out. Some customers who had selected the extra security step, however, were still locked out of their accounts on Friday.

Others who hadn’t requested Facebook Protect were also locked out, with some having trouble receiving a code delivered to their phones due to technical difficulties.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, stated in December that it would start demanding higher-risk users to utilize two-factor authentication to protect their accounts.

High-profile Facebook users, such as journalists, government officials, human rights activists, and those with a larger following, who are more likely to be targeted by hacking efforts, are provided Facebook Protect. Around 1.5 million accounts had enabled Facebook Protect by December.

A request for comment from Meta was not immediately returned.
