In 2025, FIFA plans to expand the Club World Cup into a “real World Cup” with 32 teams.
FIFA President Giano Infantino announced the rebranding of the FIFA Men’s Club World Cup as a megaevent involving 32 teams. According to the details, the new men’s Club World Cup will be held in 2025, with 32 clubs participating. Giano Infantino predicts a similar shift in the women’s Club World Cup.
The previous Club World Cup featured the winners of each region’s respective leagues competing in several rounds to become world champions.
Chelsea is the current champion, having won the title in 2021, while Real Madrid is the most successful team, having won four titles.
The new format was introduced to provide more exciting football to fans and a more competitive environment for players, potentially increasing FIFA’s revenue by billions of dollars.
Furthermore, the new system will elevate the Club World Cup to the status of a true World Cup, attracting increased interest from both fans and players. However, the qualifying system for the newly restructured Club World Cup is still unknown.
