With the release of an update for Android’s built-in file-sharing feature, Google and Samsung have rebranded the formerly well-known Nearby Share as Quick Share.

This new update paves the way for simple file sharing between Android smartphones as well as between Android devices and Windows and Chrome OS-running computers.
Concurrently, the widely used messaging app WhatsApp is experimenting with a new feature that allows users to share files with contacts who live nearby.
This feature, which was discovered by the WABetaInfo team in WhatsApp’s most recent Android beta version, uses Bluetooth technology to facilitate quick and easy file transfers between users.
With the help of this feature, users can now easily share files up to 2GB in size. This is a quick and practical replacement for more conventional methods like using cloud storage services or sharing files via chat.
File-sharing Protocols
In order for the transfer to proceed smoothly, both users need to be in the app’s special “Share Files” section, and they need to stay there until the transfer is finished.
End-to-end encryption is maintained using this method, guaranteeing the same degree of security as WhatsApp’s well-established file-sharing protocols.
Users have to shake their smartphones physically to start the file-sharing process, which adds a little something extra to the experience.
Phone numbers are ensured to be hidden during the file transfer procedure, out of the reach of people who are not on your contact list.
Although frequent WhatsApp users find this new feature to be quite helpful, others might feel that it somewhat duplicates the recently released Quick Share update from Google and Samsung.
However, the real potential of WhatsApp lies in its cross-platform compatibility; if its feature works flawlessly on both iOS and Android, it has the potential to completely change the game.
If this isn’t the case, though, there might still be more feature-rich built-in file sharing options available on other platforms.
Additional planned features include bug fixes for the camera feature and some notifications, a sticker editor, colour themes for WhatsApp’s accent colours, the capacity to share polls and transfer ownership in Channels, and more.
