The federal government of Pakistan has decided to launch a digital fuel management system at petrol pumps nationwide. The system is intended to make fuel distribution more transparent and controlled amid rising prices and supply challenges.
Fair Fuel Distribution
Under the new system, vehicle owners will have assigned fuel quotas, limiting how much petrol each person can purchase. This approach aims to prevent hoarding and ensure fair access to fuel for everyone.
Mobile App and Devices at Petrol Pumps
The plan includes mobile devices and an app-based platform at petrol stations. These devices will verify digital vouchers or quotas when customers purchase fuel, ensuring accurate tracking of fuel distribution.
Focus on Motorcycles and Small Vehicles
Initially, the system will target motorcycles, rickshaws, and small cars. Eligible users will receive digital fuel quotas that can be redeemed at petrol pumps through QR codes or app verification.
Subsidy and Transparency
The digital system is also aimed at ensuring subsidized fuel reaches the intended users. By linking fuel quotas to registered vehicles and IDs, misuse and leakage of subsidized fuel can be minimized.
Challenges in Implementation
Experts highlight that the system’s success depends on reliable connectivity, proper training of pump operators, and smooth operation even in rural areas. These factors are being addressed during the rollout phase.
Next Steps and Current Status
Preparations for implementing the system are underway, with testing of devices and software nearly complete. The government will soon announce eligibility criteria and the official launch date.
