Digital advertising boards installed in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) were switched off after they were reportedly hacked and briefly displayed obscene content. The incident caused concern among residents and quickly drew the attention of authorities late at night.
What Happened on DHA Roads
According to media reports, the incident took place on digital screens installed along Khayaban-e-Ittehad and Abdul Sattar Avenue, two busy roads in DHA Karachi. These LED screens, normally used for commercial advertisements, suddenly showed inappropriate material for a short time.
The content was removed soon after, and the screens were switched off as an immediate safety step.
Videos Go Viral on Social Media
People passing through the area recorded videos of the hacked screens on their mobile phones. These clips spread rapidly on social media platforms, creating shock, anger, and serious concern among the public.
Many residents questioned how such content could appear in a well-managed and sensitive area like DHA, especially where families and children are often present.
Immediate Action by Authorities
Following the viral spread of the videos, relevant authorities acted quickly. Officials decided to shut down the affected screens to prevent further misuse.
As a precaution, several other digital advertising boards across DHA were also temporarily turned off. Screens located on Shahrah-e-Faisal and Karsaz Road were shut down as well to avoid any further risk.
Cybercrime Agency Launches Investigation
The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has officially launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are collecting technical evidence to trace how the systems were accessed and who was responsible for the hacking.
Experts believe such screens are often controlled remotely, and weak security systems can make them vulnerable to cyber attacks.
A Serious Wake-Up Call
This incident has once again highlighted the growing cybersecurity risks linked to public digital infrastructure. Officials have stressed the need for stronger security systems, better monitoring, and strict access controls for digital advertising boards.
