Temperatures in India’s capital, Delhi, reached a new record of 52.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, says the government’s weather bureau. Delhi is under a heatwave with a red alert due to the high heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported very hot weather in Mungeshpur, a part of Delhi, on Wednesday afternoon. This broke the old record by one degree Celsius.
The weather bureau said the temperatures were 12 degrees higher than usual. Forecasters expect similar temperatures on Wednesday in the city, which has more than 30 million people, and have issued a red alert for people to stay safe.
The IMD’s red alert means it’s very hot and people can get sick from the heat. Everyone needs to be very careful, especially older people and kids. It’s hot even at night.
The IMD says the heat will slowly get better starting Thursday.
In May 2022, parts of Delhi got very hot, reaching 49.2 degrees Celsius (120.5 Fahrenheit).
India often has very hot summers. Scientists say climate change is making heatwaves happen more often, last longer, and get hotter.
