The reconstruction of the highly travelled and well-known IJP Road in Islamabad is nearly finished. The road’s new name reflects its modernised appearance.
‘Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed Road’ will be the new name for IJP Road, as announced by the Federal Cabinet, according to a tweet from Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
Renaming IJP road will have different impact
Online commenters are split on the verdict. Others have argued that renaming a major highway will make life more difficult for new commuters and local businesses, despite some commenters’ support for the move as a way to honour the memory of a great murdered soldier.
The municipal agency has reportedly agreed to build service lanes on Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed Road to accommodate slow-moving vehicles, according to a recent media report.
The official claimed that ‘slow commuters’ would benefit greatly from the incorporation of service lanes into the plan for the project. The municipal organisation is also planning to add green belts and flowers to the service lanes to give the commuters a more natural aspect.
The timing of the road’s official opening is still up in the air, but construction is nearing completion. People have complained that the government is acting “at the eleventh hour” by choosing to build the service lane
