BISP Raises Stipends Ahead of Ramadan, Offering Relief to Millions

The Benazir Income Support Programme has announced an increase in financial help just before Ramadan, bringing relief to nearly 10 million low-income families across Pakistan. The new payments will be released during the holy month, providing families with extra support as household expenses typically rise.

BISP Chairperson Rubina Khalid shared that the quarterly Benazir Kafalat stipend has increased from Rs 13,500 to Rs 14,500. She described the raise as a Ramadan gift for deserving families. As prices of food and daily items rise, this step aims to reduce the pressure on households struggling to meet basic needs.

She explained that BISP understands the impact of inflation and is taking action to protect the most vulnerable people. Social protection programs like this are designed to provide timely help so families can buy food, pay bills, and meet essential expenses without falling deeper into poverty.

Focus on Women and Financial Inclusion

One of BISP’s biggest achievements is opening bank accounts for 10 million women beneficiaries. This step has brought millions of women into the formal banking system for the first time. It gives them greater control over their money and improves payment transparency.

Under a new digital payment system, beneficiaries will receive free SIM cards linked to digital wallets. Every payment will be confirmed through SMS. Women can withdraw their funds in smaller amounts whenever needed, making the process safer and more flexible.

BISP has also introduced interoperability among its seven partner banks in coordination with the State Bank of Pakistan. In the past, beneficiaries could only withdraw money from one assigned bank agent. Now, they can collect cash from any authorised agent, making the system more convenient.

Some critics argue that cash programs create dependency. However, the Chairperson clarified that such programs exist worldwide and are meant to provide temporary relief.
