Bill Gates spoke openly about his past personal mistakes during a town hall meeting with staff at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The meeting was part of his regular twice-yearly sessions with employees, where he discusses organizational matters and answers staff questions.
Questions on Jeffrey Epstein Connection
During the session, Gates addressed concerns about his past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He described spending time with Epstein as a “huge mistake” and acknowledged that it negatively impacted his reputation. However, Gates stated that he did not witness or participate in any illegal activity.
Taking Responsibility for Personal Conduct
According to a foundation spokesperson, Gates answered a wide range of questions submitted by employees, including topics related to the release of Epstein-related files and the foundation’s future plans. He spoke candidly and accepted responsibility for his actions, emphasizing accountability.
Admission of Extra Marital Affairs
In the meeting, Gates admitted that he had two extra marital affairs during the 2010s. He shared that one relationship was with a Russian bridge player he met at bridge events, and the other was with a Russian nuclear physicist he met through business activities.
Clarification and Denial of Wrongdoing
Gates clarified that he “did nothing illicit” and said he never spent time with Epstein’s victims. Importantly, he has not been accused of any wrongdoing by victims in connection with the Epstein case. He apologized to his team for bringing them into controversy due to what he described as his personal mistake.
Focus on Foundation Mission
Beyond the personal matters, the town hall also covered the foundation work in artificial intelligence, global health initiatives, and long-term goals. Gates explained that his meetings with Epstein were initially intended to explore philanthropic opportunities and connect with potential donors, though he later recognized the decision as a serious error in judgment.
